History

It is currently believed that the concept of self-storage was first exhibited in China over 2000 years ago, as it can be seen that the Chinese stored their valuables in clay pots buried deep in the ground. Thankfully the self-storage industry has come on along way from there, with the modern self-storage method first being adapted in America in the 1950s.

Containerised self-storage first arrived in the UK from America during the 1980s. At this point in time self-storage was predominantly used by businesses to archive their files and store excess stock. It was viewed as cheap and cost-efficient method to increase the capacity of a growing enterprise.

The Growth of Self Storage in The UK

After this point, as we entered the new millennium there was a sharp increase in popularity of self-storage by individuals rather than just businesses. People began to realise that when moving house, going abroad or just for general storing, containerised self-storage was a reliable and secure choice.

Today in the UK, there are over 700 self-storage sites, demonstrating the immense popularity of this form of storage. It can be seen that from 2018 to 2022 there was an increase of people who used self-storage in the UK from 1.29 to 2.28. The industry is currently booming with popularity due to companies like Boxtor and Alert Self-storage who provide excellent customer service and containerised storage to all their customers.
